How to Return or Exchange an Item at Express

Express, which used to be called The Limited, is a clothing store commonly found in large malls. The clothing company sells items for both men and women, along with accessories. The official website outlines the detailed return policy for both in store and online purchases. Customers have 90 days from the date of purchase to return merchandise.

Returning an Item

Returning an item in store: If you live near an Express store (find a store located near you here, you can return items purchased in the store or online at the store. You need to bring your receipt or your packing slip to process the return. It is at the store’s discretion to accept returns without a receipt. The store may offer the customer store credit for a no-receipt refund instead of crediting the credit card or returning cash to the customer. If you do not have the packing slip for an online order, you can log in to your account and print off another order detail page.

Returning an item by mail: Your packing slip should have a return invoice and a pre-paid packing label attached. Peel off the return label and place it on the outside of your box. Place the invoice or packing slip with the reason for return marked on it, into the box and ship. The pre-paid label is valued at $6.99 so that amount will be deducted from your refund. If there is no pre-paid mailing label on your invoice, you can address your return to the returns department. You are responsible for paying shipping costs.

Official Express Return Policy

Express will accept your return for 90 days after the purchase date. Your original shipping costs will not be refunded and you will be charged for return shipping if you use the pre-paid shipping label. U.S. purchases, both online and offline can be returned to an Express store, but international purchases must go through the customer service department. Customers can call 1-888-397-1980 for instructions on international returns.

Gifts can also be returned by mail or in store. You need to bring the gift receipt to the store to receive credit for the return. If you return is processed by mail, there is a box on the invoice to credit the purchaser with the refund.

The customer service department is available at 1-888-397-1980. We pressed #1 for English. We then listened to all the available options, none of which mentioned returns or refunds. After about two minutes on hold, the call was answered by a representative. We asked for the returns address and the agent quoted the address without requiring an order number. She then offered to go through the return instructions, but we declined.

  1. I had a package to return but ‘life happened’ and my family needed to move so it got packed up during that time. I paid to ship it back to return (after the 90 days) and got it returned to me. I understand not getting cash back but I feel that I should have at least got store credit. All items were never worn and in the original packaging.

  2. The refund will be equal to the amount of the price paid and in the original form of tender. A merchandise credit will be issued for returns accompanied by a gift receipt.

  4. I would like to exchange my 2 items for smaller sizes. I find instructions on how to return items for refund, but don’t find any instructions on how to exchange them. Please advise
