How to Return or Exchange an Item at J Crew

J Crew is a clothing company that started in 1983 with just a catalog order system. The first store was opened in New York a few years later. The company continued to grow and expand into extensive vintage, kids and beauty lines. Today, there are stores all over New York and other parts of the United States and the world, including a wedding boutique in New York.

Returning an Item

Return an item to a J Crew store: You can find a J Crew store at http://www.jcrew.com/help/store_locator.jsp. Remember, not all J Crew stores carry the J Crew name as nearly all have individual and unique names, but carry the J Crew line. Take your in person purchase back to a store within 30 days to receive a refund or to exchange the item. The item must have tags attached and be in new condition. You can return items purchased at any J Crew store, other than a Factory store, and online to any J Crew location. J Crew Factory stores are only able to accept returns for J Crew Factory merchandise.

Return an item by mail: If you called J Crew and placed a catalog order or ordered online, you have 60 days to return your purchase. Again, the items must be in new condition and all tags must be attached. If you paid with a personal check over the phone, you will be sent a check from J Crew for the refund.

There is a Smart Label attached to your packing slip. The label is pre-addressed and pre-paid, but your refund will be reduced by $5.95 for one item or $7.50 for more than one item if the Smart Label is used for the return.

J Crew wants customers to love their J Crew pieces, but they understand there may be some hiccups along the way. If you want to return your J Crew purchase you can do so as long as the purchase meets a few requirements.

Items purchased in store must be returned within 30 days, unless the item is defective. All returns must be in new condition with tags attached.

Items purchased online or by catalog can be returned within 60 days of purchase. The same new condition requirement applies.

J Crew Factory purchases must be returned to the J Crew Factory store.

Use of the Smart Label means you accept the $5.95 charge for one item or the $7.50 charge for more than one item – return shipping.

Call 1-800-562-0258 to talk with customer service about your return. When the call is answered by the automated response system, simply stay on the line and the call will be transferred to a customer service representative within one minute. There is no option for returns, which is why we stayed on the line. We asked Amy, our representative, about returning J Crew Factory items by mail and she kindly told us we needed to return the items to the store.

  1. This site is the worst! Doesn’t recognize my order number
    which is printed on my receipt. Tried phoning the 1-800-number, and no one answers that no matter how long I wait.
    Could this service be worse? how?

  2. Agree, this “service” could not be any worse. They could not find my order number or zip code either. I guess they don’t honor their claim that returns are easy. Won’t be ordering JCrew on line any more.

  3. I need help with the proper way to exchange an on line purchase that was paid by my credit card.

    The order number is 1158953276. Paid by American express.

    I DO NOT HAV ETHE ORIGINAL PACKAGING OR THE PACKING SLIP.
    The sales tag is still on the item and the shirt has not been worn. The item was much smaller than items that I have purchased in the past in XS, I would just like to exchange for a size small. Please assist with this exchange assist in this exchange. Your website says that your exchange/return policy is easy.

    Please advise.

  4. This was not helpful at all. I will no longer be doing business with J. Crew as it would not recognize my order number.
